PONTE LUÍS I BRIDGE When this iconic bridge first opened in 1886, it was the longest iron arch in the world and spans 385 metres (1,263ft) over the Douro River between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia on two levels. Téophile Seyrig won the competition held by the government to replace the existing bridge which stood at this spot.
